Finally a Break in Gas Prices

Not only are we finally seeing a break in gas prices, but we have finally updated some good news for you guys. Gasoline consumption has dropped 5.2% in the third quarter of this year. This is the largest decline in gas consumption in well over a decade. This drop is the main cause of the lower prices. The refineries are seeing a huge amount of inventory and are cutting prices to reduce the excess gasoline in storage. A barrel of oil is trading at $60.82 which is less than half on the price of a barrel of oil in July. The analysts expect that the price of a barrel of oil should level out around $60.00 +/- for the next 6 months. We should see an increase in prices in late spring, but that is a normal tread due to more consumption.

Oil prices rose above $116 a barrel Wednesday as investors awaited a weekly crude inventory report which was predicted to show a drop in U.S. gasoline stocks. FuelMeUp's updaters have been reporting a huge difference in pump prices throughout several cities. Be on the look out, now is a good time to save $5.00 to $10.00 per fill up. The national average was $3.74 a gallon, down 35 cents from a month ago. With consumers cutting back on driving to save money, prices have now dropped 9 percent from the nationwide record $4.11 retail gas reached July 17.

Oil prices fell over 4.4% today (7-14) to settle at $138.74 per barrel. This is the sharpest single day price drop of a barrel of oil in 17 years. "There was this big ... selling pressure when prices dipped below $140 a barrel. It got a lot of bulls very nervous," said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service. "If it was a fire, you'd call it an accelerant." This is good news for a change!

Pay with Credit Card - Pay more for Gas

Be careful if you are paying with credit cards at the pump. Several gas stations are advertising the 'cash' price per gallon and adding an additional few cents per gallon on customers that are paying with a credit card. IF YOU PAY WITH A CREDIT CARD MAKE SURE THE PRICE ON THE PUMP IS NOT INCREASED. Credit card companies charge a fee to the merchant for each transaction, and with the margins being thin on gas purchases, some stations are offsetting that merchant charge by raising the price per gallon on customers that pay with credit cards. Some consumers are willing to pay the additional cost for the convience of pay at the pump, but if you want to pay the advertised price, plan on paying with check or cash. 2007 - Worst Year For Gas Retailers

According to OPIS, 2007 was the worst year for gasoline retailers profit. Gasoline retailers saw the thinnest profit margins in over 10 years. Althought there were huge month to month swings and even day to day swings, overall the profit margin for retailers faltered to 5.1%. That figure does not include the cost of doing business or the huge piece of pie that credit card giants take. It is our opinion that gasoline retailers were lucky to make a 3% profit for 2007. Also the average weekly price swing for fuel was 4.8 cents per gallon last year.
